We’ve talked about it on the comics podcast before but for the past few months Marvel has been releasing teasers for one of their upcoming event things called Spider-Men. We haven’t really been sure what this could mean. Whether it was Ultimate Peter Parker coming back to life or if there would just be two Spider-Men in either universe, which is entirely possible what with Kaine in the main universe and the Ultimate universe being crazy, we didn’t know. But now we do. Yesterday Marvel released a variant cover for the second issue of the five issue story.
Coming in June Spider-Men, written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Sara Pichelli, will have the Amazing Spider-Man Peter Parker transported to the Ultimate Universe. There he will meet the new web-head, Miles Morales. They will learn from each other about the universes and their identities, according to someone who was quoted on Comic Vine, and they will also “reveal a startling truth about a key player in the Spider-Man mythos!”
With 2012 being the 50th anniversary of the wall-crawler, this seems like the best time to release a story like this. Bendis said the following about writing these two characters and the story itself:
“This year is the 50th anniversary of Spider-Man and we’re so happy that the stars aligned for us to tell a Spider-Man story that nobody has ever seen before. It’s an honor and a privilege to present both this story and these characters to fans on such an auspicious occasion. The work Sara has done on Spider-Men is a step above the already high standard that she has set for herself on our Ultimate Comics Spider-Man series. For me, this is a celebration of the best character in mainstream comics and some of the best art mainstream comics has to offer.”
