It seems EA is taking a page out of Warner Brothers book, who late last year had gamers up in arms when they announced Batman: Arkham City would have the Catwoman missions locked out if you did not buy the game new and insert the code or pay a $10 fee.
It was reported today by Destructoid (Yes Jim, I will give you your dues) that up coming game Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning locks out an entire quest line that apparently has seven individual quests wrap up in it.
The final retail copy of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning will come with a code that unlocks the House of Valor quest line and some Mass Effect 3 type armor. If you buy the game new you will be given the code, but if you buy the game used you will have to pay for the “Online Pass” to be able to get the single player quest in this single player game. These online passes usually run you about $10 for each game.
The statement made by EA:
“The House of Valor quest line is free bonus content available to those who purchase a new copy of Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning for the Xbox 360 and PS3 by entering the Online Pass included with the game.
PC players who purchase Reckoning at one of the many digital retailers online including Origin, Steam and more, will also receive the House of Valor quest line at no cost.”
As one that has stood by the online pass idea, charging extra for single player missions and such in a single player game is going too far. I understand trying to curb used game sales, but nickle and dimeing the costumers is not the way to beat it. This is simply abuse of the online pass.
