Invader Zim was a great show. For those who don’t know, it was an animated series created by Jhonen Vasquez and aired on Nickelodeon. It was one of the earlier creepy/surreal comedy shows and, in my opinion, one of the best animated shows out there. It only lasted 21 episodes before being cancelled, and has since developed a huge cult following. Fans have been clamoring for new Zim stuff for years, and now it seems our prayers have been answered.
Oni Press, publishers of the Scott Pilgrim comic series, have announced that they will be releasing a new, ongoing series based on the little green world conqueror and his robot helper. The series is being developed by original series creator Vasquez and Nick, with the first issue set for release on July 1st. In the press release for the new series, Vasquez had the following to say about the new series…
I’m always confused when people say how much they miss Invader Zim because the show never stopped running in my head, and then I remember everyone else isn’t in my head. I try to imagine the world for all those people who don’t know what Zim’s been up to since the show went off the air and it makes me shudder. How can people live that way? Hopefully this comic helps make the world a better place.
I cannot wait for this book. It’s not a new TV show, which is the way I would actually want it to come back, but new Invader Zim is still new Invader Zim. And with Vasquez’s involvement in this new series, there’s hope that it will be at least up to par with the original series. One can hope, anyway.
