Remember Me was a game developed by Dontnod Entertainment which saw release last year. The game featured a female lead character with an intriguing story, world, and gameplay concepts, but fell flat in other important areas and failed to make any big impact. At Gamescom the dev revealed their next title, Life is Strange, which will also feature a female lead, albeit in a drastically different setting.
Where Remember Me took place in a futuristic Paris, Life is Strange seems to take place in the American Pacific Northwest in present time. One of the main gameplay mechanics will be time manipulation, and the story will revolve around how such powers can affect life and loved ones.
Square Enix describes the main character Max’s situation…
Upon returning home she discovers that Rachel Amber, a fellow senior at school, has disappeared under mysterious and rather uncomfortable circumstances. While trying to uncover the truth Max reunites with an old friend, Chloe, and makes a startling discovery: Max has the power to rewind time…
The story will be broken up into episodes and gameplay will be mostly point and click adventure game style, which really makes sense for a developer with so much focus on setting and story over solid combat and platforming.
The demo on display at Gamescom revealed some of the more interesting components of the story and setting, and hopefully this game finds more success than their previous effort. They’ve got the chops to tell a compelling story, it just needs to be wrapped in the proper packaging to maximize the experience, and in turn, profitability. I, for one, wish them luck!
