Barry Allen and Iris West have been one of the longest running comic book romances in comics. Starting in Barry’s first volume as The Flash, these two have been together for over 45 years. Now, on top of their decision to dissolve the Lois/Clark marriage, Barry and Iris will be parting ways as well.
According to the DC Source blog, not only will Barry and Iris not be married they won’t even be dating. From what the blog says, it seems to me that Iris and Barry only relationship will be the one between a journalist and informant.
“If that upsets you, sorry about that,” says Brian Cunningham, an editor (that is the only title I could for him), “But I make no apologies for opening up a traditional storytelling avenue with our hero’s romantic life, something that’s been shut closed for a very long time now. This is no indictment of marriage. I’m a married man and wouldn’t trade it for anything. But in the realm of fiction, I feel strongly that this change to Barry opens up fresh, new creative directions and exciting new storylines.”
Instead of Iris, Barry will be involved with co-worker and possible superheroine Patty Spivot. If you read Flashpoint: Kid Flash Lost, you would know that Patty got her hands on a Speed Force powered motorcycle and took on the mantle of Hot Pursuit. It is not said whether or not she will keep the magic speed bike, but it would make for a more interesting relationship between her and the fastest man alive.
