Something that’s begun to happen since Marvel started their cinematic universe is other companies with comic properties have started trying to do the same. Warner Bros. and DC have been trying for a long time and will be taking their stab at it in a few years, and even studios with other Marvel properties are attempting it, but with a much smaller stable of characters.
Sony announced last week that they have begun developing spin-off films from the Amazing Spider-Man, specifically Venom and the Sinister Six. A five man team has been assigned to the spin-offs consisting of Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddard. Kurtzman will be directing and co-writing Venom while Goddard will be writing and maybe directing the Sinister Six.
But those aren’t the only two spin-offs being developed. According to an official release from Sony, several films are in the works to help “forge a new legacy in the story of Peter Parker on screen.” No word on what those other films will be was given.
The team Sony has set up isn’t that bad in terms of talent. They’ve all worked on some pretty great stuff, and together they could make some good movies. The only curious member of the team is Goddard, who was recently announced to be writing, directing, and showrunning Marvel’s upcoming Daredevil Netflix series. He probably won’t have much time to work on all this stuff, what with him being in charge of a probably big project like a TV series. Oh well, let’s see how things work out.
