UPDATE: In a recent interview with IGN, Jason Momoa quashed the rumor that had been going around about him being it talks for a role in the Man of Steel sequel.
It’s just rumors. I want to say something amazing, but I can’t comment on rumors. It’s flattering… I’m not involved in it.
I could just be Momoa being a bit shy about his role for some reason, but for now it looks like this is real.
ORIGINAL STORY: Despite the Man of Steel sequel being tainted with original sin from both its predecessor and the fact that it’s Batman vs. Superman, I’m kind of torn on how little I hate/like the about it that have come out. Ben Affleck as Batman was an interesting and completely out of nowhere choice, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman isn’t that bad of a casting choice, and now we have Khal Drogo as… Somebody.
THR is reporting that Jason Momoa is in talks to join the Zack Snyder helmed sequel to one of the worst Superman movies ever made (at least to me it is). But who he could actually be playing is still a bit of a mystery, with the studio keeping a pretty tight seal on the details of the film.
There’s been some speculation that Doomsday could be the antagonist of the film. For those who don’t know, Doomsday was a character created in 1992 by Dan Jurgens whose entire purpose for being conceived was to kill Superman. He rather spectacularly failed to do so with what happened after the Death of Superman story arc and has kind of turned into a joke at this point.
The other possibility for Momoa could be the Martian Manhunter, as speculated by a THR source. Again for those who don’t know, J’onn J’onzz was created in 1955 by writer Joseph Samachson and artist Joe Certa. The last member of a race of green-skinned Martians, J’onn was brought to Earth because of an experiment on Earth going wrong. Stuck on Earth, he adopted the human identity of homicide detective John Jones and became a charter member of the Justice League.
Personally, if Momoa was going to be one of these two characters I would like to see him as Martian Manhunter. I think it would be a better fit for him and also I would like to see J’onn J’onzz in a big budget movie a lot more than Doomsday. Doomsday is played out and boring as fuck. Let’s do something fucking interesting.
The as of yet unnamed Man of Steel sequel is set for release in 2014.
