Last Friday, North American distributor Funimation announced that it had acquired the rights to the upcoming prequel series to the original Ghost in the Shell. It will be releasing the anime in a special edition on 2500 units on Blu-ray with English subtitles. The package will include the imported Japanese O-card, a film strip, and a translated art booklet. The limited edition is being offered before they make their regular video release of the series. Funimation also plans to screen the first two 50 minute parts of the four part series in a limited theatrical run later this year.
The series, as stated above, is a prequel to the Ghost in the Shell franchise, taking place in 2027, one year after the fourth non-nuclear war. During the investigation into a bombing in the still recovering Newport City, Public Security Section 9’s Daisuke Aramaki crosses paths with Motoko Kusanagi, a brilliant hacker in the employ of the military’s Secret Unit 501. Batou, a man with the “eye that does not sleep”, suspects Kusanagi is behind the bombing, and the prefectural police detective, Togusa, is chasing down leads in his own cases involving a shooting and a prostitute’s death.
