In the 14th issue of Miracle Jump magazine, Gantz creator Hiroya Oku stated that “Gantz will also reach its final chapter very soon. I’ll give it my all until the very end!” The manga follows a recently re-animated young Tokyo man named Kei. Kei and other resurrected people get sent out on violent, deadly, and seemingly endless missions by a mysterious benefactor.
The manga launched in Shueisha’s Young Jump magazine back in 2000, and the “Final Phase” of the manga began back in 2009 (Final being a relative term in this case). In March, Shueisha published the 36th volume of the manga; pretty good for a series that the author had gone on record saying he intended to finish in 2012.
In related news, Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Yoshiyuki Sadamoto announced in the June issue of Young Ace magazine that he will be ending the manga in two chapters. If there aren’t any breaks in publication, the manga will finish in June.
Originally launched in the third ever issue of Monthly Shonen Ace, back in 1994, the manga has run on and off for over 18 years. The 13th volume shipped worldwide last November, and the 14th volume has been confirmed to be the final one.
