Details Revealed on DC’s Trinity War

Since last year’s Free Comic Book Day, people have been wondering what Trinity War will be about. Right now in the DCU, there are kind of three trinities: The main Trinity in Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman; The Trinity of Sin with Pandora, The Phantom Stranger, and the Question; and the three Justice League teams with the main one, the JLA, and JL Dark. Now, we know what Trinity we’ll be getting… Which is all of them.

USA Today revealed some details about the upcoming crossover event. It will run for six issues over the three Justice League series, with things kicking off in issue 22 of Justice League. The event will be written by Geoff Johns in Justice League and Jeff Lemire in Justice League Dark, with the two co-writing Justice League of America.

The plot will revolve around a big conflict happening between the three teams that was brought about by the death of a hero. Johns said about the event…

We really want to find and carve out the Justice League corner of the DC Universe. It is a universe all itself with these three teams, and it feels big enough to be worthy of a Justice League story.

It’s going to be really interesting when these characters do come together, because some of them haven’t met, some of them have, and what happens and unfolds in this is going to force them to choose sides.

Of course, we’ll be getting some big hero on hero fights. Johns said that Shazam, who will be meeting the other heroes for the first time, will “come into conflict with Superman in a very big way.” On top of that we’ll also be getting some character drama, like with the (idiotic) love triangle between Superman, Wonder Woman, and Steve Trevor, and some growing tension between Zatanna and Constantine.

The Trinity of Sin will be playing a big part in the event, too. This is the newest Trinity in the DCU, having been added in the New 52. The Trinity consists of Pandora, who witnessed the birth of the New 52 universe, The Phantom Stranger, who is Judas, and The Question, who Lemire says is a “bit of a wild card.” We’ve started to see some more of him in a couple of different books, but he’s the character we know the least about so far.

While the big name heroes will be getting plenty of attention, a spotlight will be shined on some of the lesser heroes. Shazam I already mentioned, but new Leaguers the Atom and Element Woman, who are rule 63 versions of classic DC characters, will be getting the moments in the limelight, as well as Frankenstein (yes, that Frankenstein), who is Lemire’s favorite.

I wasn’t really aware of Trinity War before. I didn’t read the FCBD issue so I didn’t know anything about it. But now that I know a bit more about it, I’m kinda excited. It will be cool seeing all these heroes fighting it out, and it sounds like Superman is going to get the shit beat out of him by Shazam and hopefully some of the magic people on Dark, so that’ll be nice.
