In this day and age, where you can throw a rock into a sea of movies in development and have a pretty good chance of hitting a remake or reboot, there are some movies that I’m surprised took so long. One of them is Escape from New York. But now that rock has hit that remake right in the eye, because it’s happening.
Joel Silver, the producer of many 80’s action movies like Lethal Weapon, Predator, and Die Hard, has teamed with Studio Canal to resurrect the John Carpenter/Kurt Russell franchise about a one eyed man named Snake rescuing presidential people from famous American cities that are walled off in the future.
Studio Canal, who used to co-own the rights with New Line, is funding the project before they find a studio and are currently looking for a writer. Canal said that they are planning on making this into a trilogy of films, with the first one being a kind of origin story in the vein of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Silver will be producing the remake with Andrew Rona (executive producer on Equilibrium), with Alex Heineman (executive producer on Project X) serving as executive producer.
It has been a long time since I’ve seen Escape from New York so I can’t really remember what I thought about it, and since we only have producers I’m not sure whether to be excited or worried about this. So I’m going to default to worried.
