Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman series is one my favorite New 52 books. Snyder has done a great job writing my second favorite superhero (just after Deadpool) and Capullo’s art is fantastic. But the series, as well as the zero issue, have shown us Batman when he was already Batman-ing for a while. What about before that? What about when he was still Bruce Wayne?
The Associated Press announced on Monday that Snyder and Capullo will be going back to that fateful night in Crime Alley with Zero Year, an 11-issue story arc that will start this June. Snyder wanted to assure fans of the character that while he will be making changes, the key elements will remain. He said…
It’s not ‘let’s redo the origin. It’s time for a new story showing how Batman became who he is in the New 52.
Snyder said that the decision to write another story of Batman’s origins came about due to the success of the first year and a half of the New 52.
We already saw some changes to Batman’s mythos in the zero issue, with Batman living out of a brownstone near Crime Alley and doing his vigilante shtick without the cape and cowl. Zero Year is taking us back further.
It’s ‘The Zero Year,’ the one that no one has told the story of before. We see how Bruce became the Batman, built the cave, faced off with his first super villain.
Snyder also said that they’re not taking apart Year One, the Frank Miller/David Mazzucchelli arc that showed Batman in his early days.
Zero Year starts in issue 21 of Snyder and Capullo’s Batman, out this June.
