Trophy and achievement names have never really been something I’ve thought of when I think of things that can be controversial. But apparently they can be.
One trophy from the recently released God of War: Ascension, called “Bros before Hos,” offended some people who saw the trophy as misogynistic. What do you do to unlock this trophy? Beat a Fury to death. Yeah, probably not the best idea to name a trophy you get from beating a woman to death “Bros Before Hos.”
Sony caught wind of the offense and released a patch alongside the game’s launch. The patch changed the name of the trophy to “Bros Before Foes.” Not misogynistic, but still really stupid.
Santa Monica Studios, the developers of the game, sent a statement to Joystiq which said…
We have created and will soon push out a patch for God of War: Ascension that alters the title of one of the game Trophies. The text was offensive to some members of our community and impacted their enjoyment of the game. We are endlessly committed to ensuring that our community can fully enjoy the experiences the team has created. As such, we’ve addressed the feedback and amended the Trophy in question.
Players will be instructed to download the patch upon launching the game on an internet-connected PS3. The patch will not change anything else.
God of War: Ascension is available for the PS3.
