Con-G 2013 was this past weekend in Guelph, Ontario. The 5th year of the con had a change in venue and an attendance increase to over 1400. While this shows that the convention is successful enough to keep running, there was a surprising announcement during the closing ceremonies. The Con-G in 2014 (Season 6) will be the last one before the con either goes on hiatus or changes its frequency.
The reasoning behind this decision is that the staff are currently not capable of keeping the convention going on an annual basis. Many factors contribute to this, such as a low number of staff, staff having relocated outside of Guelph (meaning they have to travel to run the con), and staff getting older and starting families. While it is possible to solve these issues by hiring on replacement staff, the current organizers feel that such a large change in who is running the con might cause their control over it to suffer, this is an idea they may want to brace for in the future, however for right now they would prefer to keep Con-G in the hands of those that created it.
What will happen to Con-G? There are a few possibilities, and the organizers are still trying to figure out exactly what should be done next. The less popular option is putting Con-G on hiatus for a few years while they get their lives more settled. One of the more popular options was to change the con from an annual event to a bi-annual event. This would give staff more freedom while still keeping the convention alive. Either way there will be less Con-G in the near future. But fans of the con can rest assured that it will be back and in the same hands that brought us five awesome years.
