The Vita hasn’t been selling as well as Sony had hoped. Sales have been plummeting since its launch, with the only really big sales day recently being Black Friday. Sony announced last week that system would be getting a price cut at the end of the month, but when people asked Sony if North Americans would be seeing cheaper Vita’s in the near future, Sony said no.
Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, confirmed that there are no plans at Sony to cut the price of the Vita any time soon. When asked why we wouldn’t be getting one, Yoshida pointed to the exchange rate.
When I first heard that I thought it was bullshit, but apparently the exchange rate for the Yen can have devastating impacts on companies. Back in 2011, Nintendo reported a loss of almost $690 million because of the exchange rate. I guess I can understand why Sony won’t drop the price of the handheld outside Japan.
