For some reason, video game companies thought that requiring the people who play their games to have a permanent internet connection was a good idea. Ubisoft was especially guilty of this. But, time went on and everyone realized, “Oh wait, this was a terrible idea.” So they stopped doing it. Some people, however, thought that the next-gen consoles would have the same requirements. Not to worry too much, though, as Sony has put those rumors to bed with their console.
In a recent Eurogamer interview with Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida, the conversation inevitably led to the whole “always online” thing. At the press conference Sony was pushing the social on online aspects of the PS4 hard, with the streaming gameplay and the gaming social network and whatnot. When asked if you can go offline with the PS4, Yoshida said…
Oh yes, yes, you can go offline totally. Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social! So if you don’t want to connect to anyone else, you can do that.
Let’s hope that Microsoft has that same position when they announce the next Xbox.
