Last month it was discovered that Sony had submitted a patent application for an “Electronic Content Processing System,” which would have discs tagged with RFID tags so that they would be tied to a specific machine or user account for something. We all thought it was for the PS4 to stop people from playing used games. It seems that we were wrong, though.
Shuhei Yoshida, the president of Sony Worldwide Studios, spoke with Eurogamer recently about the patent and used games on the PS4. He danced around the issue for a bit, answering questions with other questions or turning to his translator to ask something, before saying…
So, used games can play on PS4. How is that?
I think that’s fucking awesome. When that patent application first surfaced we all hoped that Sony wouldn’t be stupid enough to actually permanently bind a game with a specific console or account. It’s nice to see that the people at Sony aren’t completely stupid/evil.
The PS4 will be coming this holiday season.
