The PS2 was the second console I ever owned. After getting a SNES, I held on to it for over a decade. I went over to other kids’ houses and played the PS1 and the N64, but nothing really got me wanting a new console. Then the PlayStation 2 came out, and I was stoked. After years of begging, I finally got one. It was then that I started getting into games seriously. The PS2 is what led to me game journalism in the first place. This site wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for that VCR looking thing. So it’s with a sad heart that I bear this news (I know it’s late but fuck off, I’m trying to be sentimental).
Famitsu reported that, after almost 13 years and selling over 150 million units worldwide, Sony has shipped its final batch of new PS2s in Japan. After Japanese retailers sell out of the stock they have, there will be no new PS2s ever. Sure, there are still the ones people held on to and used ones at some retailers, but it won’t be the same.
Good night, sweet prince.
