Modding is something that helps PC games thrive. They can add a new twist on an old classic or just do something really stupid. For multiplayer only games, mods can be a bit of a hassle to deal with. Mainly because they can be used to cheat, and nobody likes those people. The ones who go below the map where they can’t be shot, turn on aimbot, and just start sniping from underneath the world. SOE is putting up with none of that in their new FPS, PlanetSide 2, and have banned all mods.
In a recent post on the PlanetSide 2 forums, moderator Twist posted the following:
“It is vital that you not run software which modifies the PlanetSide 2 client in any way. If you do this, you are indistinguishable from various hacks that work in the same manner. The result of this is that you will be banned from gameplay and lose your characters/items.”
There are plenty of totally harmless apps out there that do very little, but SOE cannot make any exceptions, saying that “they would simply be used as a shield excuse by players trying to cheat.”
The post went on to say that applications that alter DirectX or Windows and not the game client can still result in suspension unless those apps are given the OK by SOE.
The two things that players are allowed to do in this kind of vein are user initiated .ini files, which can cause bugs if the settings aren’t right, and programs like Mumble, Teamspeak, and Fraps.
