Back in the summer I first heard about Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the novel Robopocalypse, and I was excited. It’s Spielberg directing a movie about the robot apocalypse. How could you not get excited about that? With the revelation to me that this was a thing, we learned that Spielberg wanted Chris Hemsworth for the movie, and from what I read it looks like Spielberg still wants him. Since the summer, two other people have been added to the cast list: Ben Whishaw, who played Q in the new Bond film, Skyfall, and the recently added Anne Hathaway.
Yes, Empire reported earlier this week that Hathaway has been confirmed as a cast member in the mechanical uprising. We don’t know what role she will be playing yet, though. The book apparently only has two important female characters, but Drew Goddard, who is adapting the novel, may deviate quite a bit from the source material. So it’s entirely possible that a character that was once male is now female, or Hathaway could be an entirely new character. When asked why she signed on to the project, Hathaway had this to say:
“Whenever I’m taking time off, I always joke to my team that I’m on vacation unless Steven Spielberg calls. And I was on vacation and Spielberg called. So I was like, ‘OK, put my money where my mouth is’.”
For the uninitiated, like myself, the book is set in a future where a supremely intelligent AI called Archos used everyday appliance and technology to take over the world and wipe out humanity to protect the planet’s biodiversity. That is one robot apocalypse story I actually haven’t heard of before. Bravo.
Robopocalypse is scheduled for release on April 25th, 2014.
And coincidentally enough, an audiobook version of the original novel is available on Audible. Why not sign up for a free one month trial and get the book for free at audibletrial.com/deathsdoorprods?
