Since DC relaunched itself with 52 new series, the subsequent Second and Third Waves, and any other excuse they come up with to release new series, 11 of those series have been cancelled. I would care a lot more about them if read more than one of them, but it’s part of the business. Sometimes titles don’t do well so instead of paying artists and writers to keep making something that bringing in little money, the editors move those people on to other projects. Now DC has just announced another four cancellations, and again I only really care about one series.
CBR reports that DC has cancelled Blue Beetle, Grifter, Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E., and Legion Lost. These titles are low-selling series for DC, as you would expect, but apparently that’s not the only reason these books are getting canned. Again from CBR, VP of Sales for DC Comics Bob Wayne said in an interview that the decision to cancel a title doesn’t specifically come from that title’s sales numbers, but from the ideas the creators still have for the story.
“There’s always going to be some pressure on whether or not the new idea being pitched is maybe more exciting than another series we have that may have already told its story. That might mean it’s maybe time to put that title on the shelf for a while or have the characters migrate into some other title. So there’s not really a hard and fast rule where there’s a line in the sand where if it falls below this point on the Diamond chart or doesn’t make this percentage of X, it’s gone. It’s really very story driven.”
Blue Beetle, Grifter, Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E., and Legion Lost will all be ending in January 2013 with their #16 issues.
