Director of the terrible Total Recall remake, Len Wiseman, is set to helm Universal’s latest remake of The Mummy, being the first in four movies about Mummies that don’t star Brendan “Furry Vengeance” Fraser.
Wiseman told Deadline that his take on the wrapped monster would be set in the present day. “When I first heard Universal was relaunching [The Mummy], that is the image that popped into my head, the period tale, the old monster, but when Bob and Alex pitched it, there was a great new take and approach, and a very different mummy as well…It’s a darker twist on the material, a scarier version.”
Screenwriter for the project Alex Kurtzman stated the remake will “[reach] into the deep roots of The Mummy, which at its beating heart is a horror movie and then an action movie, and putting it into a context that is real and emotional.”
So a spooky scary action movie that has feelings? Never been promised that before.
Len Wiseman’s Mummy remake is set for a 2014 release date.
