Digital distribution has become very popular these days. Video games, movies, comics, television, pretty much everything we cover is available digitally. Now it looks like Google is getting into the digital distribution market, as well. Earlier this week Google signed a deal with 20th Century Fox to release over 600 titles for purchase or rental through Google Play and YouTube as part of Fox’s Digital HD initiative.
But it’s not just their back catalog Fox is releasing. Prometheus, the Alien prequel thing that I haven’t seen but hear is awesome, is going to be available through Google Play and YouTube three weeks before it is released on Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand. Fox and Google will also be releasing X-Men, Ice Age, Black Swan, Family Guy, Glee, Modern Family, New Girls, and many more.
All of these titles will be available in the US first, but Google will be bringing this service to more countries soon. And Fox isn’t the only company they’re working with. Jonathan Zepp, Manager of TV and film content partnerships at Google, said, “We’re now working with all six of the major film studios and many independent studios to bring you the best new releases and your favorite classics to rent or own.”
