Anyone who had a heartbeat in 1998 probably knows about the disaster that was the American Godzilla. TOHO disliked it so much that they decided to put that version of Godzilla in the same universe as the real Godzilla. Where it and the American people faced the mockery of the now branded “fake Godzilla” until the fake was finally killed off by the real deal in Godzilla: Final Wars (this sequence only took about 30 seconds).
Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures have decided that this whole American Godzilla thing needs another chance. Godzilla is being described as a gritty, realistic take on Godzilla. The film will be a reboot of the franchise meaning a potential for a new origin as well as the possibility for a Godzilla design the audience hasn’t seen yet. The film is being directed by Gareth Edwards, and is set to release May 16, 2014. As a fan of the Godzilla franchise I hope this movie turns out well. Although it’s very unlikely they’ll use rubber suits and practical effects, so already it’s disappointing.
