The 35th issue of Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine, released on Wednesday, confirms the cast for the upcoming anime based on Kenjirou Hata’s manga.
For those not familiar with the series, it tells the story of 16 year old Hayate, son of compulsive gamblers and recently sold by those same parents to some “nice men”(the Yakuza his parents owed money to). Hayate, having worked throughout childhood to basically support the habits of his parents, despite giving him near superhuman physical prowess (at one point he catches up to a bullet train on his bicycle), decides enough is enough and, in order to make back the money owed to the mob, decides to kidnap someone for the ransom. Through a combination of poor word choices and misunderstandings, the target, a 13 year old girl, mistakes his kidnapping attempt as a confession and after he then save her from some actual kidnappers, she offers him a job as a butler(and love interest) at her estate until he is able to pay off his debt (something that will take about 40 years at his pay grade). The show/manga is a screwball comedy that can go so far into the realm of ridiculousness that it actually loops back to normal.
While the new anime will not strictly fit into the existing source material, Hata has personally written new scenarios for the anime. A large portion of the cast is returning from the original anime, such as:
- Ryoko Shiraishi as Hayate Ayasaki
- Rie Tanaka as Maria
- Shizuka Itou as Hinagiku Katsura
- Mikako Takahashi as Ayumu Nishizawa
- Ayumi Fujimura as Chiharu Harukaze
- Haruka Yamazaki as Ruka Suirenji
Manglobe has returned to produce the anime.
