The new anime based on the Key Visual Arts (Kanon, Clannad, Angel Beats) visual novel was released on Sunday in anticipation of the October debut of the new show.
Little Busters! follows Riki Naoe, a member of the titular group of friends consisting of 4 boys and a girl, who have all been very close friends since childhood. The other members are the leader, Kyousuke, his sister, Rin, the kendo fanatic, Kengo, and the muscle obsessed Masato. We pick up in their second year of highschool (except Kyousuke, as he is a year older), and we follow them through their antics as they gain friends, forge bonds, and generally just be mischievous kids. This being based on a Key title you can expect more than just a standard dating sim flavoured visual novel.
Yoshiki Yamakawa (Baby, please kill me!, Hatsukoi Limited) is directing the anime, with scripts in the hands of Michiru Shimada (Jewelpet Twinkle, Shugo Chara!). Haruko Iizuka (Inu X Boku Secret Service, Ōkami-san & Her Seven Companions) will be doing the character designs for the anime, with most of the voice cast remaining the same from the game, although Yui Horie and Sora Tokui will join the cast as the protagonist Riki Naoe and the recast Sasami Sasasegawa, respectively.
I am certainly looking forward to this. There hasn’t been a Key-based anime I haven’t enjoyed immensely; Angel Beats! and Clannad are the two best emotionally driven narratives I have ever seen, and if they don’t tug at your heartstrings, nothing will. I cannot sing the praises of Key enough, and I’m anxiously awaiting their next masterpiece’s release.
