The minions in Despicable Me were great. They added some more silly comedy to the movie. They even managed to give us an entertaining short about a banana. Now Illumination and Universal think they’re ready for their own movie.
The script will be an original story focusing on the antics of the minions. There will be new characters introduced as well as some characters from Despicable me making appearances. This script was written by Bryan Lynch. The movie will be directed by Pierre Coffin with Kyle Balda co-directing. Coffin will also be voicing the minions along with Chris Renaud. The movie will be released in 2014, one year after Despicable Me 2.
This film could prove challenging for the studio to pull off. Spin off movies don’t tend to be very popular and in this case they’re working with characters who don’t even talk. While it’s reassuring that a scrip is already written, it would be very easy for this to become a one gag film. It will be interesting to see if these characters can be more than slapstick comic relief.
