A few months ago Jordan Weisman, on of the designers behind the original Shadowrun, started a Kickstarter to help him and his company, Harebrained Schemes, make a new Shadowrun game for the PC. In a very short amount of time the campaign exceeded its goal. Now another company is throwing their hat into the Kickstarter ring with another Shadowrun game.
Cliffhanger Studios, who are working in conjunction with Harebrained Schemes and Catalyst Game Labs on some kind of Shadowrun revival, are currently developing a free to play MMO called Shadowrun Online. On the Kickstarter page Cliffhanger said that the reason they are making an MMO set in the Shadowrun universe is so that players can play with friends like they did in the old days.
“The first project, Shadowrun Returns, focused primarily on providing a great single player adventure experience, while Shadowrun Online – like the pen & paper version – is all about experiencing the awesome world and gritty atmosphere of Shadowrun together with friends. Fluid co-op gameplay and intense player vs player faction wars set in a persistent and evolving world – this is what Shadowrun Online is about!”
Cliffhanger is also saying that the world of the game will be shaped by the choices of the players. There will also be some tie in with the pen and paper game that Catalyst is developing. When players trigger events in the MMO, they will cause changes within the tabletop as well, presumably through expansion and shit.
At time of writing the campaign has raised $68, 805 of its $500,000 goal and it has 26 days left. Check out the Kickstarter and contribute, because if everything works out with this game it could be really cool.
