Back in 2008, Universal bought the rights to a bunch of Hasbro properties in order to make movies out them. One of them was Stretch Armstrong, the dude who you could stretch. Universal had Nicholas Stoller writing the thing, who also wrote The Muppets most recent movie, and Taylor Lautner was set to star in it, who is just shit but he’s also kind of a big name for some ungodly reason so good on them. But then shit fell through and the movie got canned.
Earlier this year the rights were picked up by Relativity and now director Breck Eisner is in talks to direct the thing. Eisner’s best known previous work would probably be The Crazies, the 2010 remake of the George A. Romero cult classic. It’s a bit of a weird shift, going from horrible pitchfork murder to stretchy kids toy, but I can dig it.
Relativity has apparently been developing this thing since they got their hands on, because I also learned while reading the source article for this story that the script for the movie is being written by Dean Georgaris, who also wrote the screenplays for The Manchurian Candidate and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.
Taylor Lautner dropped from the project so we have no casting details yet. Relativity is shooting for an April 2014 release.
