If you’ve listened to our Video Games Podcast, then you may know that I felt that the ending of Batman: Arkham City was one of the best game endings I’ve seen in a game (severely undermined by the Catwoman shit) and it would be hard to make a game taking place after the events of that game where you played as Batman. Rocksteady apparently agrees with me, because according to a source at Variety the next game will be prequel to not only Arkham City but Arkham Asylum, as well.
According to the source the next game will be taking place during the Silver Age of comics, which takes place between 1956 and 1970. It will chronicle the Batman’s first encounter with the Joker. As an added little bonus, since Warner Bros. can’t seem to do anything involving these guys where they aren’t just side characters to Batman, the Justice League will have a role to play in the game. There wasn’t any news given as to what that role will be, whether they will have a side story type thing like Catwoman or if they will just appear in cutscenes and have challenge rooms like Robin and Nightwing, but I guess we shall. Assuming, that is, if this story is true.
If it is true this would be a really cool thing to see. By the end of Arkham City you just have so many fucking gadgets, it’ll be interesting to see how Rocksteady handles the gadgets next time. Since this game will be taking place in the past, Batman won’t have the same level of tech he did in Asylum and City. So seeing how the deal with that, especially the Detective Mode stuff, will be really cool.
