At Comic Con last month, the main cast of the upcoming Avengers movie was revealed. The cast is:
– Chris Evans as Captain America
– Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
– Chris Hemsworth as Thor
– Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk
– Scarlett Johannson as Black Widow
– Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye
– Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson
– Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
Now, what do you notice about this cast list… There is only one woman. But not to worry, director Joss Whedon says that Scarlett will not be the lone female in this movie.
According to ComicBookMovie, the director said “It is true that the movie is only going to have one female Avenger, but she will not be the only female character.” Apparently, Marvel Studios is considering British actress Alice Eve, from She’s Out of My League for a minor villain role in the film. Since she has been released from X-Men: First Class as telepathic mutant Emma Frost, this is entirely possible.
In terms of story, Whedon said “It will be a new story that has many things from different arcs of the comics in it. There is no one Avengers story that you can just do the way that you can do the origin of Spider-Man. You really have to cull from the original and the Ultimates, which is one of The Avengers titles.” With over 45 years of material, Whedon and co-writer Zak Penn have a lot to work with.
The Avengers premieres May 4, 2012.
