In 2009, Shane Acker made his directorial debut with 9, a post apocalyptic adventure film about living rag dolls fighting robots. Now he’s working on his next film, another post apocalyptic adventure film with the help of Irish animation studio Brown Bag Films and video game developer Valve.
The film, called Deep, is set in the aftermath of World War III. What remains of society is living underwater in sunken ships and focuses on Sullivan, the captain of a nuclear sub, as he deals with a group of more advanced people called the Wayfarers who could potentially save humanity.
So what is Valve doing to help make this movie? According to Darragh O’Connell, the film’s producer, “Valve’s tools and technologies, based on its Source game engine, allow Acker and Brown Bag real-time rendering, and editing, simplified character animation and economical lighting.”
By using Valve’s Source engine, it also makes it easier to develop a tie-in game for the film. Brown Bag is also looking at Steam as a way to distribute the movie, something that Indie Movie: The Game will be doing tomorrow, so it’s entirely possible.
Deep is currently in pre-production, so no release date has been announced.
