Hellblazer is the series that has the longest, uninterrupted run in DC’s catalog. Or at least their Vertigo imprint. Launched in 1988, the series has run for almost 25 years. And it will pass the 25 year mark before coming to an end.
The Associated Press announced recently that Constantine’s book will be ending with issue 300, which will be wrapping up the Death and Cigarettes storyline. The story will start in issue 298 and follow Constantine in his final days. What he believes to be his final days, anyway.
But we won’t be without the English, chain-smoking magician. Aside from him being a member of Justice League Dark, DC has announced that Constantine will be getting his own solo series called… well, Constantine. The series will be written by Robert Venditti, a New York Times best-selling author, with art from Renato Guedes, who did the art for the Wolverine Goes to Hell and Wolverine’s Revenge arcs of the Wolverine book.
Venditti said that Constantine would be “the same character that people know and recognize.” He went on to say in the official press release:
“Few characters in comics are as complex and entertaining as John Constantine, and I’m finding him to be every bit as enjoyable to write as he is to read. It’s my goal to have the new Constantine series be equal parts familiarity and surprise. This will be the Constantine we all know and love, but facing new and unexpected challenges from both inside and out.”
Hellblazer will be ending with issue 300 in February 2013, and Constantine will be launching the following month.
