Hayao Miyazaki, the creator of the much beloved Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Spirited Away, among others, is one of the 15 recipients of Japan’s Person of Cultural Merit award. The award is given out every November to those individuals who have contributed to the culture of Japan for many years, with the highest order, the Order of Cultural Merit, getting decorated by the emperor himself at the Imperial Palace. This year’s Order of Cultural Merit recipients include stem cell researcher and Nobel Prize winner for Physiology or Medicine, Shinya Yamanaka.
In other pleasant awards news, Tetsuya Chiba (Ashita no Joe, Notari Matsutaro) has been announced to be one of the people of Japan being awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays and Rosette (that’s one award, not three) this fall.
