Valve Porting Steam to Linux

A few days ago Valve started up the Valve Linux Blog, where they said that they are currently working on porting the Steam digital distribution client as well as the game Left 4 Dead 2 over to Linux.

Started in 2011, the Valve Linux Team have been messing around with Ubuntu, the most popular Linux OS. As of now, the team has managed to get the Steam up and running with most major features working properly. They said that a few minor features are still having some issues, though. Soon they will be starting an internal beta to look at the auto-update experience and to test compatibility.

The team has also managed to get Left 4 Dead 2 running natively on Ubuntu, using the game to test the Steam client’s game-related features and just to test the game itself. There goal is to get the game running on Linux just as well as it does on Windows.

Left 4 Dead 2 won’t be the only game they port over to Linux. While no other games were mentioned, one of their listed projects was “porting additional Valve titles.”
