Donnie Darko is one of the greatest cult classics of the new millenium, especially in the mindfuck category. It’s also one of those movies where you notice something new every single time.
There are pictures of Frank scattered everywhere. Frank (James Duval) is a giant bunny rabbit that plagues young Donnie Darko’s (Jake Gyllenhaal) life and tells him to fuck shit up before the end of the world. But there’s a catch. Donnie is a paranoid schizophrenic, so you get the added fun of questioning every aspect of every movie. Drew Barrymore plays his English teacher and adds nothing of importance to the story line, probably why she gets fired in the movie, and Patrick Swayze plays a motivational speaker who gets completely owned by Donnie on a couple occasions.
Jake Gyllenhaal does an awesome job being a sarcastic, mildly psychotic dick, in fact the movie starts off and already he dishes out sarcasm like it’s his job. He also has a pretty good creepy face for he walks down dark hallways carrying an ax.
James Duval spends most of the movie in his suit whispering to Donnie, which is creepy as fuck, especially with a mask like that one. If you don’t know the mask, fuck you Google it, now.
Patrick Swayze is a pretty typical motivational speaker, he smiles a lot while spitting total bullshit to his audience. At one point you get a glimpse at his completely over exaggerated self help movies and it’s so bad that it’s awesome.
Drew Barrymore doesn’t deserve anymore recognition for performance but I’m sure she was a big help in producing it. Way to go, Barrymore. Also if you pay close enough attention, you’ll notice Seth Rogen’s and Ashley Tisdale’s bit parts.
Many people have different opinions on what actually happens in the movie because there are strong implications of a couple different possibilities. It’s very open to interpretation, but regardless, our dark hero has quite a trippy adventure. This film gets five crazy pills out of five and I recommend this movie to anyone who loves a good mindfuck, as well as everyone else, just to confuse them.
Final Score: 5/5
